I think the timing chain tensioner on our 2005 Cooper S has gone TU. I just hope the guide rails haven't failed or I will have to take a bunch of stuff apart. As it stands now , I just have to get at one very hard to reach bolt.

Isn't it usually more of a rattle when the chain tensioner or guides wear?

Is the tensioner hydraulic on those. Is it a common issue? I know this a stupid and obvious question. When was the last time the oil was changed?

mine failed a few months back put about 10 miles on it after I heard the chain slapping. Couldn't get to the bolt with the shitty breaker bar I had so I towed it to a shop who checked the guides and said no damage was done to them. Just a fair warning the bolt is an absolute bitch to access. If you don't drive it until you fix it the guides probably won't be too bad. It's a bit of a gamble not to check them but it's your call

It is hydraulic and this isn't an unusual thing. Around 8500 since last change and 105k miles.

I guess it is hard to tell a rattle from a tap. It is rhythmic.

You check them by pulling the cover right?

If its a tapping sound similar to a diesel, its the oil, especially being at 8500 miles. Mine had been sounding like a diesel for forever, changed from castrol syntec high mileage to mobil1 and it sounded infinitely better. Might be different, hard to tell what sounds sound like by just words...

I changed it today and it didn't mellow out like I had hoped. I've always used Castrol Edge 5W-30 as recommended by the Mini forums. Might have to try Mobil1. I've used it on my Evo since new. What weight do you use?

I did 5W-30, I'm still up at Purdue so I stick with that. Too bad it didn't mellow the tapping, it very well could be the timing chain.

Although, could it be something similar to VANOS on the 'ole straight 6's? I know on my brothers e36 M3 that it had a nasty tapping just because the VANOS unit caused some valves to stick a little.

This mini looks disappointed with it's current predicament. Also I keep staring at the photo wondering if it ended in a spectacular save or a spectacular roll.

I think he is beyond the point of no return, but you never know.

I've seen drivers save it from that angle before, which gives me hope, but it doesn't look like he's turned into it, so it probably went over

yup pull the cover and check for any plastic shavings. The kit isn't all that expensive for the tensioner and the guides if you want it for piece of mind

Yeah, Pelican has it for $170.

Did not save. Car actually went into the spectator area and hurt two people after rolling several times. I always joke with people who question the safety of the Mini that it turns into a soccer ball with all the airbags, I guess the exterior lends itself to that as well.

Well shit. That's about as far from the result I was hoping for as you can get

While tracking this one down I found a few other wrecks. Looks like racing Minis like to roll and roll and roll.
